Okay so I obviously gave up on the daily updates, since no one was going to care. I can do the same thing in my own notes without having to make people think "oh, that crap again".
Still working on it.
Have 75 different video files (most almost 2 hours long) queued up for x264 2-pass encoding... the first one is at 2% of the first pass after about 10 minutes. Of course I have the encoder settings tweaked toward maximum quality for the bitrate (actually I probably could have taken the bitrate down a bit more because of that, or just dropped multipass and just gone single pass, but I'm trying to all out here. Quality or bust!) but this computer is very, very far from slow and the encoder process appears to actually be using all four cores and isn't really disk bound.
Okay actually by my rough calculation just now, processing all the video in this queue with these settings will take about 52 DAYS. ouch.
Umm I guess I should have checked how much the encode time was going to be affected by changing the max ref frames setting. Apparently more than I thought it would. But it took like an hour to add them all into the queue, so I don't want to do it again. Actually, I need to script it eventually anyway for the next batch of videos.... Too bad digitizing the club library can't be my thesis project.
