Jun. 7th, 2004 01:37 amive figured for a while i was going to have to replace the hard drive in the server.. its an ibm 75gxp drive and got so loud that I could hear it from upstairs but i left it like that for a year since it seemed to be functioning ok.. actually tried using the computer for something last night (usually it just sits there and.. serves internet) and I got the Click Of Death so I shut it down and moved the whole main hub to the router, which despite its nice features and good web interface, seems to have some issues with routing.. the packet management just doesn't seem to be very good.. my brother complains about lag and ping spikes on it and even accessing webpages goes slowerim pretty sure its not any of the cabling and I cant figure out what else it would be... I do have the whole hub plugged into the 1st router port but my brother was ocmplaining that one time when he directly plugged into it so I dont think this arrangement is causing additional collisions or anything. My big achievement yesterday and today was getting the three macs that were stowed in the corner up again... powermac g3 266 (OS 9), g3 server 333 (OS 10.2), and a 120mhz powermac 7200 (OS 8.5). I've also set up the huge HP scanner on the 7200 and vnc server on two of them so I can sit here and scan on one computer and then send it to the other and view without getting (which could also be a bad thing but right now I've been walking over to the 266 to work in photoshop since it crashed earlier with photoshop and vnc server open, probably because the only 'classic' version of VNC that ive found is beta) The 333 isnt quite as stable as i remember it being in osX so right now its just sitting running seti@home since I havent yet figured out whats wrong (im pretty sure its not a hardware issue). That brings the number of computers in this room plugged in up to 10, and 8 of those are on right now. The electric bill for the coming months will not be fun but its for a good cause....oy 7200 just crashed too while closing something. my guess is that vnc has something to do with it because all 3 of these computers were rather stable up until the point when they were ruthlessly unplugged and stacked in the corner by members of my family with the desire of rearranging things. someday brian and i will try to get as many computers as we can on and networked for fun for a little while but at this point i think a pretty big space could be needed for that.. could even connect all the classic macs on an appletalk network and then use the appletallk to ethernet bridge to join them to the ethernet. that would be an interesting experiment. so yeah.. i ended up scanning one of the pictures from prom as well as the picture of the people on my floor from school this year, theyre at http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/ibmman85/album?.dir=/e6e9 mmm a T1 would be nice so I could actually host good quality content myself.. as well as for other people but until i have a few hundred dollars a month for internet.. yeah.. i know the wooster people are just getting out of school really this week.. looking at the calendar im already starting to sort of get worried that summer is over because it really doesnt seem like theres *that* much time left...
