Oct. 31st, 2003 06:56 amhi. woke up at 5:45am today along with alot of otger people on the floor for a wonderful little RIT ritual called course registration. This is when, near the end of a quarter, everyone from a certain year all rushes to sign up for courses before they are full in the morning as soon as registration for that year is enabled. This would be well an fine except for that theres a few thousand people trying to connect to the servers at the same time. this would be fine too since the servers are on the LAN and all. Here's the thing though- its a VAX cluster. Digital VAX, circa 1980's, originially designed around the architecture of the PDP-11. so yeah overall the servers have obviously served their purpose well for a vry long time but cant handle the demand when so many people try accessing concurently. This leads to having to try telneting to the server and going through the webpage.. since there arent enough availible connections both telnet and the webpage just kinda sit there and occasionally the telnet server will respond and actually ask you for your username and password only to have it time out 420 seconds later... some people are fairly lucky and happen to connect just as somone who had a slot in the server disconnects.. odd thing is that its really fast once you actually have a slot in the server most likely because it routes to a node in the cluster that isnt processing the stuff at the front door (login and authentication) so yeah... somone in the room next to us managed to get a connection on telnet so we just used that but its 7 am now and i went to sleep at almost 2 last night so this is bad im oging to have to goto sleep again.. im currently in for 13 credits since i hadnt really planned on having both japanese classes full i'll probably wait a few days and see of anything opens up in either and then see what i can do and although i could stay with 13 its even less than what i had this quarter so i'd find something i could take maybe a different liberal arts (writing and lit i guess or philosophy) or of course the best thing would be to find somethign more computery that i wouldnt have to change majors for. i'm in computer science 1 this time but something networking or admin stuff or something else hardware would be good.. ill see how it goes i guess.. im going to get to register a few days earlier (ok probably 1 day earlier) next quarter since hopefully i'll actually have second year status because of the credit i have from AP bio so maybe it'll be easier next time
