Apr. 22nd, 2007 11:30 pmI really spent way too much time and money on this, but it works

and a video (not all too exciting) http://www.fivefeetdeep.com/fileuploads/buttonthing/MVI_0545.avi
hopefully it'll make an appearance at Anime Name That Tune at Tora-Con on April 28th, as was the purpose of building it.
Total time: probably like 20 hours
Cost: $15 kit, $15 for 3 easy buttons... and then the rotary tool and accessory kit ($40), enclosure (bought one too small the first time, so like $20), and a depressing $70 on other crap at radio shack in 3 visits, some of which was essentially wasted since some of the stuff wasn't so good (like switches that melt when you solder them).
All in all, it was a very good concept, with a reasonably good plan, but I could have spent more time finding components I needed from one place for much cheaper than radio shack. Since I didn't really have that time and I really wanted to actually finish this once I got it started, the cost ended up ballooning. I ended up becoming quite bent on finishing it since it's pretty rare that I follow projects to completion, I have so many ideas but don't often act on them. Not sure if it was totally worth the money, time, lack of sleep last night, inhaling solder and melty plastic fumes, etc but I think I learned a few things. One of which would be that power switches are more useful on the outside than the inside.
