OK, so I just finished watching Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift. Here were the reasons why:

1. It's set in Japan.
2. It's set in Japan.
3. I watched the Initial D live action movie last week.

The movies in this series aren't well known for their acting. I haven't seen the first two, but apparently reviews on amazon say that this one had actually more of an emphasis on plot and characters than the first two. I actually sort of find that... relatively hard to believe. By far the best character (and actor I suppose, of the main characters) with the best lines was Han, who had the only philosophical-ish lines that made any sense at all, and was able to deliver it well. It is relatively obvious (even from just the trailers for the movie) that most of the actors aren't japanese, except for a few minor charactors and extras, and thus most of the occasional lines in Japanese sound kinda awkward, and it's sort of funny that they all say 'gaijin' as 'gaijeeen', especially shawn/shaun/sean (no one seems to know what the real spelling would be). I suppose thats a trend I'm used to now though, with the actors in Memoirs of a Geisha, and many of the actors in Intial D being chinese (makes sense with initial D though, it was a joint effort between a Japanese and Chinese company). However it seems that most of Tokyo Drift was actually filmed in california, with background shots CG'd in that were shot in Japan. I am somewhat impressed that they were able to make that sort of amalgamation look relatively seamless, especially the big chase scene where they actually made a street in LA look like a road in Tokyo, and then CG'd all the buildings in later. So my theory is that they took the budget most movies have for actors and applied it to cars and stunt drivers who actually could drift. However while the cars look a whole lot less fancy, I'd say that initial D was a better movie as far as movies about drifting go. More dialogue, more interesting characters, just as much action, and more comedy (that doesn't involve lil' bow wow or a guy with a southern accent trying to get around in Japan). Also while it seems there are people who like the Tokyo Drift soundtrack... I'm not among them. Although initial D live action didn't have the Eurobeat of the series... it still had slightly more tolerable rap than tokyo drift. Unless you're talking about the Tokyopop original release of the Initial D anime in america, for which apparently they had some random unknown rapper write things about drifting... ouch.

So y'know maybe I'll go attempt to drift some mountain pass in my tricked out* '99 windstar! The emergency brake is a lever at least (not the foot pedal kind) so it'd be doable. Three gears of V6 cargo hauling power!

*Tricked out= has a remote starter, and a thingy for sunglasses on the center in the ceiling
